A Mighty Heart (trailer): I think people tend to forget that Angelina Jolie was once very highly regarded as an actress; I know I do. Several years of bad performances in bad films has a way of undermining one’s credibility. I’ve read a lot about how good she is in this movie, though, and I have no reason not to believe this from the trailer. I’m actually looking forward to seeing this.
Paprika (trailer): A bit of a bone to pick here: the trailer includes a quote from New York Times critic Manohla Dargis that this movie is “evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon, while most of their American counterparts remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox.” I’m not sure of the context of that quote – it’s not in her review of the film – but taken at face value, this seems unfair in a way. It has the same problem as saying that “foreign movies are so much better than American ones” or “movies were better in the 1940s than they are now”. The problem is that no one sees the crappy foreign movies that don’t get imported or remember all the old movies that sucked. Similarly, only the most imaginative foreign animated movies get released here, in general. Well, those and the Pokemon movies.
1408 (trailer): I dunno, trailer looks OK. Might be worthwhile to check out.
Evan Almighty (trailer): Third straight week that there’s a sequel released that I’m not going to see. Unlike Fantastic Four and Day Watch, though, I haven’t seen the first movie.
