Also now there’s a personality profile available at whysoserious.com. Guessing that getting a full score on that unlocks another goody.
God that picture is awesome. Good thing that WB’s behind-the-scenes nonsense (JLA) has virtually ensured this will be Nolan’s last Bat picture. Heaven’s forbid we should have a shot at a quality trilogy.

Wha-wha-what? Has he commented officially on not doing another one? That’d be a gut punch. I’ve heard nothing about that.
The guy who runs one of the Batman film sites (who has deep connections to the production) said that based on what he’s heard: he hasn’t been this pessimistic about the future of the franchise since Batman & Robin.
Hopefully he’s wrong.
God willing. I would abstain from watching a sequel to The Dark Knight without Nolan in protest.
Also, to get a full score – or whatever you might call being ‘A Scream’ is – on the personality profile, you have to click on as many answers you can on the multiple choice. Classic.
“Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another… if I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!”
I’ll have to play with that, sounds interesting.
Hopefully Nolan will end up working things out with the studio. I just don’t understand why WB couldn’t hold off on using Batman (Superman is fair game, seeing as how the next movie will likely be a light reboot ala Universal’s The Incredible Hulk) for a few more years.
Meanwhile, Bale is doing three Terminator movies with fucking McG…
The padlock at the bottom remains locked despite my best efforts. Taking a wild guess something (time, certain choice answers, clicking some invisible place) unlocks it.
Not having Batman in the Justice League is akin to not having Wolverine in X-Men. Not appeasing Nolan is akin to pissing off Peter Jackson while he’s in the middle of filming The Two Towers. If I were Warner Bros I’d wait a few more years, get a proper script in the meantime, a well-chosen cast and not rush into things, which it looks like they’re doing here.
And I did a double-take on Bale doing the Terminator sequels as well. Great casting but McG? Maybe Bale knows something the rest of the world doesn’t.
Bale’s motivation is purely financial. He’s allegedly bringing in very little for the Bat-flicks (seeing as where his career was at the time, not a surprise) and even less for the various indie dramas he’s filled his resume with.
While I’m sure the eventual third Batman flick will pay well, he’s probably looking for several years of guaranteed big paychecks so he can afford to keep doing the films he really wants to do.
I understand it, as shortsighted as it may end up being.
Peter Jackson will end up doing the Two Towers, particularly if The Golden Compass sinks and takes most of New Line’s upper management with it.
Makes sense. Well, he’s as good a John Connor one could ask for. Let’s hope they get someone a little better than McG for directing, though, even if I don’t think he’s the devil, or Worst Director Ever (TM). He’s just not very, uhm, deep.
Peter Jackson will end up doing the Two Towers,
You’re referring to The Hobbit.
Doh, you’re right. I stand by my original statement as well…
Personally (not being a fan of Jacksons) I was far more excited about Peter Weir taking over the franchise.
Edit: Regarding McG, I’ve never understood the hatred. He’s certainly more talented than Michael Bay. I just don’t necessarily think the Terminator franchise is a good fit for his sensibilities.
Sorry, my inner nerd just had to correct that. Peter Weir was taking over the franchise? Now that’s a weird choice.
Also, I’m a fan of Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy, so I’m hoping it’s a success (quality- and boxoffice-wise.
I think The Golden Compass should be a hit. I don’t think that the Catholic league’s call for a boycott in this country will hurt it (that sort of thing tends to drive up business).
I think the Golden Compass could go either way. I think the trailers have been vastly underwhelming, the creative team is anything but consistent, and neither the studio nor the film’s two “stars” can open a film…BUT I guess if The Chronicles of Narnia can open big.
My gut: so-so opening and it drops fast. No sequels. Robert Shaye out at New Line as a result.
You could be right, but it seems that almost anything family-oriented like this is going to do decent business around Christmas. These books aren’t as popular as Chronicles, but that didn’t have big stars, and this one at least has Nicole Kidman.
In terms of stars: I would actually say they have none. Kidman has virtually zero drawing power and Craig couldn’t open an envelope outside the James Bond franchise. New Line is nearly as reliant on marketing/name/concept as they were with LOTR in that regard.
I see it falling more into the “kinda hit” category alongside things like Lemony Snicket (which at least had Jim Carrey) and Eragon. Decent opening, quick fade.
Getting back to the Golden Compass: according to director Chris Weitz, the production budget was 250 million. Even before marketing, that makes it the most expensive film in NL’s history.
250 million for the first installment of a trilogy featuring NO STARS. I can’t imagine how much the sequels would theoretically cost.
Well, I would doubt that it will make it’s money back. I figure it for about $150 million, unless it’s really good.
Golden Compass is now tracking for a 23-32 million opening. That would equal a best case 120-130 domestic gross on a pre-marketing 250 million budget.
I’d say the exit of New Line’s current management (Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne) will be virtually assured after this weekend. The big question then will be if NL will continue to operate as a separate entity or if WB will just absorb them.
So I jsut saw The HA HA HA Times and was wondering if theres anything to all of the words and phrases the Joker circled?
