“Come see the most health-hazardous movie of the summer! Do not eat before seeing this movie. If you have a history of epileptic seizures, do not see this movie. If you have a history of motion sickness, do not see this movie. If you have a history of heart diseases, do not see this movie. If you are color blind, you can see this movie, but you probably won’t like it. Or you’ll see nothing.”
Looks and sounds exactly like a saturday morning cartoon. I can’t put my finger on it but it reminds me of one of those all-star-cartoon-race-across-the-country things. Dick Dastardly? Snively Whiplash? Whatever their names were…
I’ve never seen an episode of the original Speed, but this certainly has the feel of a ‘toon. To me that’s a good thing because it means they achieved exactly what they wanted. However that may be too narrow a spectrum and they might miss the wider audience they need to stay afloat.
a little bit o’ trivia…the radio announcer in this clip who says “local fan favorite…” was the voice of Speed Racer (and racer x and others) in the original cartoon.
I know this isn’t related…but it is a trailer…have you guys seen the Swedish version of Hancock? There’s a bit more to a couple lines…fleshes out what it looks like they’re trying to do with the character…
Hey, guys…I nearly jumped out of my seat when I read this on io9…this has to be a joke…
FROM io9:
“I saw Speed Racer last night, and though I can’t tell you much about it yet (full review on Thursday!), I can say this: It might actually be better than director/producer pair the Wachowskis previous effort, The Matrix. I know them’s fightin’ words, but you gotta trust me on this one. Or, better, take our poll below and see if you can guess what makes Speed Racer better than the flashy trilogy that pitted latex-clad hackers against machines who enslave humans in a VR world so they can use our body heat as energy. Honestly, how could a movie be better than that? Take our poll, and I’ll tell you Thursday if you got it right”
…have you guys seen the Swedish version of Hancock?
It’s definitely better. I don’t doubt the film will open well, I just doubt that it will be good.

It does sound like one. I hated the Matrix sequels as much as anyone, but their existence doesn’t change the fact that the original is a modern classic.

I disagree. To me, the sequels (or more accurately, Revolutions) ruined the whole experience. It’s difficult to watch the original now and not see it as the first part of a story that frankly turns out to not be worth the time.
And besides that, it’s clear now that even taken on its own, the original is a flawed movie. The story is pretty choppy (a problem that would obviously grow in the sequels), and falls apart during the last third in favor of a lot of arbitrary action. It’s like a microcosm of the series itself.
I’ll happily grant that the original still holds up as pretty fucking cool at times. But I don’t feel like it’s the classic I once did. Maybe I’d feel the same way about it now even if the sequels hadn’t happened, but I do think that the problems with the sequels make the problems with the original easier to spot.
The first seven minutes is up over on Hollywood Elsewhere…
Oh. My. God.
Atrocious.
Thanks for the tip. That clip is basically the first 4 minutes combined with the 3 minutes James posted above.
I’m sold. If there is any way I can get away to see this (preferably in IMAX) I will do it. Mainly because it’s a sight and sound spectacle meant to be seen on the big screen, get the heart pumping and cause bleeding eyeballs & eardrums. And I have no “previous fan” baggage to bring to the table. I’m the ideal customer!
The M’s on the tires are a nice touch I didn’t notice before. This thing is over-CG’ed to the MAX. Can’t wait
I’d see it in IMAX if I could (as a test of my personal endurance).
I think this is a film I will probably never see. No way I’m seeing it in a theater based on what I’ve heard and already seen, especially with a 2:15 time length. I might have seen a 90-minute film. At this point I probably won’t even see it on DVD.
JS went from fan to disenfranchised. That’s another evidence of ace marketing from the WB.
I’m with Joe on this one. I like roller coasters and the visual spectacle here makes it look like the closest you can get to an epileptic seizure. And how can you not love a film where a guy seriously says “the only way to stop these people is to bring them to justice”? It might suck like nothing else this year, but it’s sure to be an experience.
I was a fan of the original cartoon when I was seven, and I haven’t seen one in close to forty years. I doubt I would like the cartoon now, except as kitsch. But this certainly isn’t being marketed for people who are old enough to remember the cartoon. I do hope you and Joe go see it and tell us all about it and enjoy it.
Dave Poland is certainly defending this over on the Hotblog.

Released early June here, and I’ll probably be in London then, so might take a while before I see it.

Okay, now I know it’ll suck. The man has the taste of a tranny nightclub owner.
Ahhhh…the taste of a tranny nightclub owner! That’s awesome! Ever see how Poland bashed There Will Be Blood? The guy’s a moron.
I will not sit here and allow you folks to trash tranny nightclub owners by comparing them to the man who thought Win a Date With Tad Hamilton was a modern classic.
What irks me about Poland is not his opinions, so much (nobody is going to have the exact same taste) but that he tends to assume a superior position–if you don’t agree with him you “just don’t get it,” or you’re a “hater.” His arrogance is appalling.
Agreed, his defense of Speed Racer yesterday was extremely childish. Essentially: if you don’t enjoy it – you’re old and out of touch, Gramps.
Yeah, me too, JS. I’m ashamed today to say that I bought into it at first. I gave into reality around the time he was insisting on Phantom of the Opera as a frontrunner for Best Picture. Reading him now I can’t stand his overbearing attitude.
You’re right…everyone is allowed their own opinions and I guess we’re in consenus that he just says things way too arrogantly.
But I do love his discussions on where the money goes and how much of it Hollywood is actually making at the box office…

Haven’t read Poland in some time. Never been a big fan, and I get bored after reading him for more than a couple days in a row.
Actually, I read very, very few movie sites anymore. Even Wells I only read on an occasional basis.
