Movieweb has an excerpt from an interview with Christopher Nolan and Gary Oldman on a panel for the upcoming The Dark Knight. Oldman was asked if he thought, considering Ledger’s death, whether the Joker might return. His response revealed not only his opinion on the matter, but also the potential identity of the next big Batman villain in the (inevitable) third film.
When asked if he thought they should recast Ledger for the third film, or just not include the character, Gary thought it was a good idea, “I don’t see why not. I mean, they did it with Katie Holmes’ character. I understand that this is a different circumstance, but I think another actor could do the job. I think Heath would want another actor to do the job.”
Oldman then took a moment to think about it some more, “Maybe we don’t need the Joker. Because we’ll have The Riddler.”
Sounds great to me. Nolan is basically taking all the really cool, non-superhuman, but still creepy, villains and hopefully clearing away all memory of the Schumacher Batmans. Even if I’m personally holding out hope for a demented, slightly Eastern European, arms-dealing Penguin.
Anyone have any casting suggestions?
OK, I didn’t read the spoiler part, of course, but isn’t it obvious who the villian’s going to be? Anyone who’s even remotely familiar with the Batman story knows who Harvey Dent is. And there’s even a shot in the current trailer that hints very strongly at this.
Unless it’s someone different.
Never a big (character name withheld) fan, he always seemed like a poor man’s Joker. But as always: I trust Nolan.
Well, think about it. There’s so far always been two villains in the Nolan Batman films. Makes sense that there’d be two in the next one after that. Harvey Dent is very likely one of them, but who would be the other one? Or do you think he’d just focus on one?
Considering that the Nolan brothers are responsible for two of the most mind-twisting films ever made, the guy seems right up their alley to me.
I don’t like these spoiler threads. I’m checking out of this one.
Oh, thank God he’s gone!
So, anyone got any dirt on Brian?
Spoiler: If what I’ve heard is correct, you’ve already guessed who the other “villain” is.
Really? Can’t quite see how they’d get The Riddler to fit into that scenario. But now I’m already anticipating the third before the second is even out yet. Damn it. Damn Nolan and his dark but brilliant adaptations.
Doesn’t all of this tell us that the Joker doesn’t die in The DK? That’s kind of a major spoiler. And what about Scarecrow, who was still running lose at the end of Batman Begins?
Everyone knows that the Joker could be thrown into a fucking wood chipper and still survive. If he could be said to have one superpower, it’s the ability to survive major damage.
I don’t consider speculation regarding his return a spoiler.
But I’ll fix it, just in case.
I wasn’t accusing you of spoiling, but Gary Oldman.
Well, I posted it there for all to see, so if it be considered a spoiler (which, I’m not really sure it is), then the responsibility is mine.
Anyway, sorry, didn’t mean to come out so angry.
To be fair: I can’t imagine anyone would think WB would make the same mistake they made back in 89.
As for dirt on Brian – you’ve come to the right place. Although, he showers daily so I’m not sure there is much.
I’m just looking forward to The Dark Knight. I don’t really care about spoilers for the next one…I probably won’t remember them after I wake up tomorrow anyway.
I hope it’s the penguin really .. DeVito .. you rule boy :)
I have thought about this a lot and I want to see if it gets any support:
Poison Ivy and the Riddler. VS Batman
Ivy is a bio-chemical terrorist and torments Bruce Wayne’s character who now lacks any love interest. The riddler serves as her under appreaciated henchman who makes spreading the chemical agent fun and confusing for our hero. With the city in danger and the DARK KNIGHT being an outcast for the crimes he “committed” the city learns that it needs someone who stands on the line for their safety. Ivy takes control of the mobsters in the city and begins running things her way with the riddler as her brilliant and frustarated assistant, still edward nigma. Does anyone feel the connection here?
Nope. No connection.
I had thought about the possibility of Poison Ivy or Catwoman since he needs a new love interest.
I don’t think Poison Ivy fits with the new view of Batman. He should only face villains who don’t have superpowers.
And has Nolan signed for a third film yet? According to Entertainment Weekly he hasn’t yet.
no super powers for Ivy, bring her down to earth. She isn’t holding Gotham hostage she is a terrorist. Using her knowledge of plants and nature as weapons and chemical agents to make attacks on gotham.
Also the penguin should make an appearance maybe not as a major villian, but there is a story arc that makes him into a high level gun runner and weapon’s dealer who controls gotham’s night life. I think that perspective could definately be pushed.
I’ve checked back in.
I want no part of Poison Ivy in the next one. I’ve never thought her character was of any particular interest. She’s definitely a second-rate Batman villian.
I feel the same way about the Riddler, although I can see him fitting in to some kind of complementary role, like Scarecrow in Begins.
But the basic situation here is that any kind of supervillian is going to be problematic. What are they going to bring to the table here that tops the Joker?
Assuming the Nolans make the third one, they have a choice to make: are they continuing an established story arc? Or are they making a series? Because if they choose the former, then I’d say that we’re done with the supervillian part of the story. He’s dealt with the “one man terrorizing Gotham” scenario.
And the end of Dark Knight points in a different direction anyway. The problems Gotham faces are of a different nature than the ones at the end of Begins. They point to a city faced with a very fundamental internal disorder. The external threats have been neutralized, but at great cost. Fear has been laregely been replaced by anger and hatred.
‘Fear’ was the organizing theme of the first film, and ‘escalation’ was the organizing theme of the second. I think the third is going to be ‘justice’. And to that end, I think things are set up for the return of the League of Shadows, an organization well suited to take advantage of Gotham’s internal division and Batman’s weakness, while not dominating the foreground like another supervillian.
What form could they take? Well, did Ra’s al Ghul actually die in that train crash? Or did someone else assume the leadership position when Ra’s died?
Oh, and in terms of love interest, in the comics world, Ra’s does have a daughter…
Or they could have Talia al Ghul be Catwoman. That’d be a nice twist. Could bring out the whole justice thing against Batman, as she’d be wanting to avenge her father.
Empire Online has a few suggestions.
I’ve read every comment on here and I’ve seen alot of good ideas.
I think since everyone is going against Batman I think that the next movie may-be-like the Hush series that Jim Lee drew(just more reallistick villians). Everyone will be against him. The mob will be run by black mask now and they’ll hire Deadshot to kill batman. Dead shot may be a friend of Bane so he’ll get bane in the picture. two-face will be probably the head of another group with hush, and maybe the riddler but i’ve never liked the dude so ya. and of course the police will totally be after him. and i think it would be cool of they throw tailia ine there too towards the end.
but then i think he’ll win over the villian groups but the police will totally be after him in maybe in a 4th movie that won’t just
just a batman movie. the police or mayor mayget superman in the mix that could be just a batman superman movie.
also we’ve been talking only talking about robin….. WHAT ABOUT Night Wing. He’s really dark and really complex come on
but idk
summary: it will take after the Hush series in ways
Two more for the rumor mill: Johnny Depp as the Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4639550a1860.html
Alright, wait a minute.
Poison Ivy a second tier villain?
You can sit through an entire first movie with R’as al Ghul as the villain and you can say Poison Ivy would be a poor choice?
Wait, R’as al Ghul isn’t Ken Watanabe, it’s really Liam Neeson? You got me on that one.
And you’re knocking Poison Ivy for having…”superpowers” when Ghul has a Lazarus Pit and uses host bodies that he transfers his consciousness to?
Sure, they changed it in the movies, but why couldn’t they make it as Aviv said, and make Ivy a bio-terrorist? Makes pretty darn good sense to me.
And as for the other commenter…boy, would I love for them to hew closely to some type of Hush character arc and confrontation. The hush story line…the Hush story set written by Jeph Loeb, would be a fantastic place to take it, and MUCH stronger, with Ivy and Hush and Riddler and Joker, et. al.
They used the Killing Joke and The Long Halloween as…markers for the second film….Loeb wrote Halloween…would be great to see them use Hush as a marker for the third…but if Hoffman’s the Penguin…man, do I want to see that…
But Depp as the Riddler? Don’t buy it, don’t want to see it, please put it back.
The Depp rumor is new, the Hoffman thing has been around since (at least) 2005. I don’t believe either.
How about Angelina Jolie as Catwoman?
That’s another oldie, no interest whatsoever. What I liked about Ledger’s casting is that no one had a clue what he’d do with the role.
Is there anyone out there (and I’m talking from online movie geeks to Soccer Moms in Peoria) who wouldn’t know every beat of her performance long before she stepped in front of the cameras? The lazy way out would be to hire Jolie.
Left field is the way to go. I’m talking Kate Hudson or something.
What’s funny about that story is the only source seems to be Julie Newmar, who must wait by the phone to give her opinion on who might play Catwoman.
James:
Couldn’t. Agree. More.
EVERYONE would know what Jolie was going to do with the role.
I think Hudson is a bit too cutesie, but you know what I love.
The idea of having Halle Berry play Catwoman.
Now, I know this is a stretch, but, man….
Would I LOVE to see…
ANGELA BASSETT play Catwoman. Talk about what they could do with that.
I know she’s getting up there, but that would be my dream casting…
I think they should go with King Tut as the next villain, or maybe the Mad Hatter (tongue firmly in cheek).
Speaking of the Mad Hatter, supposedly Depp will play him in Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
Yeah, a second tier villian. I don’t know what she brings to the table that moves the story forward. Obviously, this being all hypothetical, I could be proven wrong, but right now I just don’t see it.
And a bio-terrorist? Please. You might have noticed that the Joker already did the terrorist thing. What’s Poison Ivy going to do with it that’s not going to be an inferior retread of Joker? “Alright, Batman, I’ve set up a diabolical moral dilemma for you … but this time, with plants!”
In short, I don’t see how the third film uses the terrorist angle without diminishing returns.
As for Catwoman, I suppose a part of me doesn’t want to see her. Looking back on the Burton films, I think Pfeiffer pulled that off exceptionally well. You’d have to find someone who unambiguously betters her, like Ledger did with Nicholson, in order for it not to suffer by comparison.
But I agree that Jolie would be the worst possible way to go.
I’m warming more and more to your theory, too, that each of the movies so far has dealt with an over-riding theme…and I’m starting to warm to the “escalation” idea…I’d have to see the movie again to see if I agree with that being the theme…
Interesting…
The next villian will be the Riddler.
Remember the crazy person Harvey Dent was interrogating? Batman said that he’s just some nut from an insane asylum. This crazy person (who laughs alot) at another point of the movie has a green key chain. I think Christopher Nolan is giving a pretty clear clue that the Riddler will be the next villian.
woah… what about a green key chain. which crazy guy?
I noticed that Carmine Falcone(Tom Wilkinson) had a question mark shaped cane in batman begins, the was made crazy, so…that’s my guess
The theme in the dark night was whether the human race naturally chooses to do right or wrong. The Joker was trying to prove this with the boat scene.
Remember the guy who knew batman’s idendity. He had red hair and worked in Wayne enterprise, just like the Riddler did in the comic books. Plus Mr. Reese sounds alot like Mysteries.
But he looks nothing like Jim Carrey!
http://www.comicmix.com/news/2008/07/28/wholl-be-the-next-batman-villain/
Supporting post number 39 and probably what he based his post on. Please site opinions which are not yours.
I have the perfect villain/hero for the next Batman movie. Azrael.
I don’t know why no one even brings him up, he fits perfectly into this new series of films
You can adapt this character to be Ras’ Al Goul’s son, who knows about Wayne, is jealous that Wayne was his “best” student and has no sympathy for human life if the person has broken the law or committed a crime.
He stand somewhere in between Ras and Wayne.
It fits perfectly with the dilema of escalation shown in Dark Knight.
Azrael simply kills any law breaker unlike his counterpart Batman. Azrael believes jail is for suckers and thinks Batman has accomplished nothing.
He also hates his father and think Gotham can be saved but ruled with an iron fist.
If someone breaks the law they face the sword of azrael.
Plus a great scene would be batman and azrael facing off with swords like bruce’s training for the league of shadows.
Plus the character can be crafted and not look too goofy or fake.
I really think Nolan was hinting to catwoman as the next villain because in the movie Bruce Wayne asks Fox if his new suit will protect against dogs and he replies it will protect him against cats……..I don’t know but that seems to me like somehing that was definetly not unintentional.
But what about BANE and TWO FACE as new villains?Only this time BANE must not be an idiot who can only kick ass,and growl without any sense! In comics BANE was boss,
child who was born in prison, and become smart and strong only on his own, unlike BANE who appear in BATMAN AND ROBIN.TWO FACE must look like he must look!,in BATMAN FOREVER ,TWO FACE look like a clown who was more laughing than talking, and i cant understand does one side of his face is evil,or clownish and thats one of things why movie was so awful. If we started talk about clowns than lets continue,in first movie CAPED CRUSADERS main enemy was JOKER,who was a clown,in second movie main enemy was more or less a clown,in third there was already two clowns, its OK about JOKER:),PENGUIN(I cant take seriously guy who is driving on the DUCK-MOBILE) AND RIDDLER,but villains like MR.FREEZE,TWO FACE,BANE is not allowed to be clowns!ALL BATMAN ENEMIES IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE CLOWNS?,and NOLAN understands it and this is big THANK YOU from me to him for that. But i think NOLAN already made a choice and i think villains in upcoming movie gonna be ZSAZS AND TWO FACE,but who knows, thats my opinion.I HOPE NOLAN GONNA MADE WRIGHT CHOICE!
Black Mask should be the main villain, who starts to spoil a blossoming and brighter Gotham after he (Roman Sionis) is forced to sell his company Janus Corp. after his bold new line of cosmetics leaves women disfigured. Of course, Bruce Wayne, an old “friend”(his family really despised the Waynes, but wore a mask in public and acted friendly), buys Janus Corp.
Sionis is embarrassed, even more when he proposes to his fiance’ at the merger party and she rejects him in front of everyone.
Sionis blames Bruce Wayne for this, and destroys his family’s mausoleum, he escapes.
Embarrassed, he takes a piece of the black coffin that was destroyed and creates a mask to intimidate people. He then must turn to the underground to get revenge since the
general public laughs at him. He becomes Black Mask.
The False Face Society becomes the major criminal organization in the city, and Batman, still public enemy number 1, must return.
Black Mask receives a letter from an Edward Nygma.
“You want Wayne, I want the Batman.”
The Riddler ends up being Mr. Reese, who knows that Batman is Bruce Wayne, so he knows that he can use Black Mask to get to Wayne without having to go through Batman.
Throw in Catwoman as a vigilante in Batman’s absence, and a possible love interest…
Maybe even an awkward, funny looking, walking, and talking nightclub owner/criminal named Oswald Cobblepot and you can make for one very interesting story.
“Why do they call him The Penguin?”
“Once you meet him, you try to remember his name.”
That’d be a decent plot for a movie.
I think the problem with your idea is that that is way too many villains. I know the third in a series tendency is to throw in 50 bajillion plot lines (PotC 3, Spiderman 3, Xmen 3). I hope the third batman keeps things grounded. The Dark Knight’s length was just about right, a little on the long side for some people, but frankly they shouldn’t make the third one any longer, and more than a couple of villains might do that.
Michael Caine says it’s Depp as the Riddler and Hoffman as the Penguin.
Hoffman pours water on the rumor:
Hoffman was in a comic book film of sorts – ‘Dick Tracy’ almost 20 years ago – but it was only a cameo and probably done as a favour to the director.
hoffman says that he just heard about the rumor, and a rumor it is that he is ti play the penguin in batman 3. he said that he would rather watch someone else play the role than himself do it. so unfortunetly we will not have hoffman. idk what dent thinks about the riddler/. and we should still keep in mind that nolan dosnt want to use alot of main charachters. so who knows wo will be in batman 3. but who ever it is nolan will do a hell of a job.
I like the batman franchise. It makes it hard to choose which villain I would recommend. I like blackmask. He might be a good foe. My second would be riddler.they are both interesting villains.
They could re invent ventriloquist. Have him lose his family as a child and as a teenager use the scarface doll to talk 2 people (the doll wouldnt actually be alive). Then have black mask be his mentor and boss trying to destroy bruce wayne. All this while batman is running from the cops like at the end of the dark knight. But they cannot go back to the joker, ledgers performance was perfect.
Brad Pitt as The Riddler, Angelina Jolie as Cat Woman.
What more could you ask…
Jack black as The Penguin ?… Now your just being greedy.
i have seen pics of harly quinn the riddler and ctwoman for the next movie
CTWoman? The Greenwich-born and raised villainous who will stop at nothing to get a sneak peek at Prada’s fall collection before rushing to her 6:00pm Bikram Yoga class and a clandestine meeting with her tennis instructor?
ok heres how the story line goes 1st we see scarecrow and his mentorteaming up just like the original story next we see his arch nemesis or his main P.I.A. joker next its twoface who is come and gone in like what 1/4 of a movie leaving batman on the run from the law thanks to his heroics so now we find gotham police looking to capture the bat for the suposed crimes committed they call for help sending them the coruptgov. agent of nigma or as we know him better riddler if were lucky theyll leave it open for the next set of villans or as we all will enjoy way too much penguin and joker
cameron dias as catwoman lets gooooooooooooooooooo
joe peshe as penguin lol idk how 2 spell his name but the lil guy from good fellas n leathal weapon
&
linsey lohan as batgirl lol sike nah but she wud probably do good since shes all pretty girly girl
Personally, i think Nola will want to plug right into the demented puzzler persona with Riddler because right now that’s is the pules of horror movies. Scream pulled off the who-dunn-it and then the Saw series tilited serial killers upside down. but everyone may be forgetting two important facts about who will play riddler.
1) Kevin Spacey scared the crap out of everyone in Seven
2) Kevin needs to take back some credibiilty with villains after the superman 2 fiasco
Now with Riddler set, two face can remain in because if you take 2 face and his random chance and added the mythodic puzzling of riddler you get half of joker’s persona wrapped up. the other half is the desire to unmask batman. here enters Dr….Hugo is it? the crazy doctor from arkam who wants to destroy batman and figures out his identity.
It should be Johnny Depp as the Riddler.
Since all the comments above are voting for, I am going to give you a list of what to vote NOT for so without any further interuptions
2 face
Catwoman
Poison Ivy
Talia
Scarecrow
The only sure fire way to get the riddler in is if he is the product of the Jokers influence. Sorta like in the Silence of the lambs where he consults with the most notorious psycho, but is really just the Joker’s bitch.
Penguin very do able. Make something out of the panic inducing psychotropic gas that spread through GC in Batman Begins.
Evolution anybody?
Im sure that Nolan will deliver, if he would ever read this i would say don’t make it cheesy and get Christian Bale to not do the whole deep Batman voice. I have heard barking dogs make similar noises. The voice he needs to use is the part in Batman Begins where he is talks to Gordon for the first time. Not Bruce Wayne-ish, but not barking dog grabble, a happy median please?!? and you are awesome.
I agree with the sentiment that there should be no external threats to Gotham in the next film. Batman should instead be presented to a situation where he has to defend himself from a whole slew of different pursuers. There should be no more than 2 major villains, lest we head into a Spiderman 3 type craptucular. One of the major villains should be either a reluctant James Gordon or an eager new D.A that’s seeking to take down Public enemy #1 either as a path to personal glory, or out of idealism. As Brian said, the them of the previous two films were Fear and Escalation respectively. However, I take serious issue with the idea that the theme of the next movie is Justice. From the ending of the Dark Knight it seems more likely that the theme of the next film is Flight.
Batman should be facing a threat to himself in the next film, not a threat to Gotham. The city should be reeling in chaos, but not the type that Batman can alleviate. Only a few choices could be made for the remaining major villain slot in my mind, and they have to come in under specific circumstances. The Riddler is the villain that I feel most people want to see, and I agree that he would be a great choice under these conditions. A) Nigma should be the head of a rival corporation, somewhat like in Batman Forever, but with no world conquering campiness. He should be someone revered as having amazing strategic ability, almost psychic when it comes to business trends, etc. He can also have his trademark fascination with mind games, but more as a personal quirk. He should be seeking to find something dirty on Bruce Wayne, rather then Batman. Perhaps spend the entire first third of the movie trying to find out more about Wayne’s personal life, looking for dirt. It should all culminate in Nigma challenging Wayne and the police; who will win? Will Wayne figure out Nigma’s identity as The Riddler first, or will the police find out Wayne’s true identity as The Batman first? That would provide a very different, but still potentially satisfying and engrossing film right there. I kind of like the idea of Joaquin Pheonix in the role. Anyone who has seen Gladiator knows he can play an amazing wormy, conniving villain with power and I’d love to see what he could do with the role.
Riddler as a serial killer or terrorist would lead to retreaded territory from the first 2 films as well as the 2nd Punisher and the Saw films. Meaning it would feel done to death and cause people to lose interest in the series.
Bane is the other possibility. Make him a large, imposing figure who could actually best the Batman in single combat. Have him hired by the remaining mob remnants in an act of desperation. Have him be like he was in Knightfall, a criminal mastermind who is hunting The Batman looking for a personal challenge. Have Bane and the Mob and Gordon/New DA pursuing Batman at the same time in one story, or have Gordon/New DA and the police pursuing The Batman and The Riddler pursuing Wayne in the other and you’ve got likely the best cat and mouse thriller of the last ten years on your hands. Of course, that’s just my opinion.
ps. Anyone who wishes to see Talia or another member of Ras’s family in another movie had best consult Batman Begins again; Ras clearly states at the beginning of the film that they were murdered, which is what drove him over the edge to take the title of Ras Al Ghul.
The Riddler would be a good choice for the next movie. Though his motivation could never be as disturbing as the Joker’s (“watch the world burn”= terrifying), he definitely could match the Joker’s ruthless theatrics and criminal genius. He could also easily be adapted to fit the realistic tone of the films.
But I also really like the idea of bringing in some unexpected villains such as Holiday, Zsasz or Black Mask. Zsasz particularly could reintroduce the problem left unsolved at the end of Batman Begins… where did all the homicidal maniacs from Arkham go?
At the same time, I’d really like to see Catwoman. She’s fit in well with where the plot left off at the end of The Dark Knight (she is a talented burglar after all, and the mob lost a ton of money due to the Joker’s little bonfire). And her black clad, whip wielding silhouette would complement the films’ gothic style. I don’t think she should be the main villain by any means, but she does bring some interesting complexities into the mix. As we’ve seen with Rachel, Bruce has a tendency to obsess over the women he’s attracted to. What would it mean if he were to obsess over a villain, a person’s whose actions run directly contrary to his own honorable convictions? His struggle with this attraction would certainly bring out the darkness and moral ambiguity in Bruce’s personality, not to mention emphasize how human nature makes total incorruptibility impossible for Batman. In many ways, Catwoman could cause more trouble than the Joker in tempting Bruce to break the rules. Besides, I feel like Bruce’s character wasn’t explored as much as it could have been in The Dark Knight, and examining the object of a person’s attraction can tell a lot about who that person is. So many possibilities… so tough…
But the important thing is to develop the main story, and the main story is the salvation or damnation of Gotham City and how Batman’s role in this battle has brought out positive and negative extremes. As long as the villains fit into this plot, I don’t see why the next movie won’t be just as good if not better than The Dark Knight.
Me and my friend Aaron thought of a few ideas. First is to have Bane as a semi-super villain hired by the mob to kill batman after failed attempts with the Joker. Although have Catwoman as a side character to spark Bruce’s/Batman’s love life. Catwoman could be the major thief she is at times but greatly help him at times of need.
Another idea is to have the Penguin as a major crime boss, slaves, gambling, etc. And when Batman interferes, he highers Bane as major muscle, which like the comics, he breaks Batman physically, rather than mentally like the Joker.
OR! Have Black Mask as the crime boss, after all the other syndicates have failed.
BTW! Did half of you guys actually watch this movie? TWO FACE IS DEAD! HE IS NOT COMING BACK! HE IS DEAD AND BURIED!
I wish they would put Hush into the next one. I wish they would make a Hush movie, for that matter.
love the idea of the the riddler in the next batman. screw frost dick and that chomo penguin, bring in more real characters. enter the riddler and catwoman, it’ll be epic.
If it is correct that Killer Moth thinks, ” the criminals of Gotham needed a guardian just as the honest citizens had Batman,”(according to comicvine) I think Killer Moth could be a cool kind of villian…
If its the Riddler, only Daniel Day Lewis could show up Heath’s performance, if its Catwoman they should call Michelle Pfeiffer, remember she didn’t die in batman returns.
I think it’s time to give Halle another shot. She’d be a purrfect fit for the universe Nolan has created.
The latest: Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Riddler heats up:
I’m not buying it.
I’d like to see some of the following in the next B-man flick.
Roman Sionis (Black Mask), Talia Al Ghul, Thomas Elliot (Hush), Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Johnathan Crane (Scrarecrow). I know he’s been in the last two films, but i just think he’s a very cool character. Plus, with Cillian Murphy starring in Inception, and being stated as saying he’d be interested in reprising the role, I think it could work.
As for the others i picked, well I do suppose Bruce Wayne does need some what of a new love interest. Talia Al Ghul being a better fit in with the direction Nolan may be taking the film. Selina Kyle would be a great character to see, but i wouldn’t go as far as Catwoman. Black Mask and Hush both have a dislike for Bruce Wayne, both have never been in any film, and Both I believer would fit in the Nolan universe of Batman. As for the Riddler, well I would love to see him renvisioned by Nolan, I didn’t much like the Jim Carey spandex version, I much prefered the Batman:the animated series version. His character does however have more color than the other villains i suggested, but i’m just not sure i’d like to see anything which may mirror what Heath Ledger did with the Joker. Anyway, I suppose we’ll see soon enough who they decide to go with. I just hope it top’s The Dark Knight, not that i found it bad, it would just be cool if it did that well. :)
people. harvey dent (two face) died at the end of the dark knight. i agree it would have been better if he lived and in the next movie team up with the riddler (like the comics and the animation) but it just won’t happen. and no doubt nolan won’t include robin in his next film. i mean, who wants to see 13 year old dick greyson wearing green and yellow tights, swinging around the new dark and scary gotham with the new batman (who isn’t really a hero now. more of an outlaw protecter) ? and gordon did say batman was an outlaw if he isn’t what the city needs (since he breaks the rules to do what he does). the next movie in my perspective, will be about arkham. seriously, what would be better about a guy in arkham that gives the guards a riddle (i think you know where im going with this) so they try to figure it out while a sleezy arms dealer (the penguin) busts him out. then the riddler and the penguin wreak havoc on gotham. in my opinon, the riddler should be played by joseph-gordon levitt and the penguin played by johnny depp.
If Penguin’s in the next movie, I hope to hell that he’s played by Martin Scorsese. Seriously.
That would be great, although I doubt Nolan would do anything that fun.
It doesn’t even have to be stunt casting. Marty can play in all straightlaced and Nolan-ish if he wants to.
We know he can play creepy; he did it for his Taxi Driver role. I just see so much potential here. It can be like Truffaut in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Vincent Cassel as the Riddler (or the Joker).
Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin.
Gemma Arterton as Cat Woman.
Anthony Hopkins as the Mad Hatter.
I don’t think it will happen, but I think using Harley Quinn in a movie would be great.
People are saying the villain is King Croc or Croc Ock or something like that (hence the Lousiana setting). I don’t know who that is.
I’ve never head for King Croc either, but here’s all you need to know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_Croc
The film is being shot in New Orleans, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s set there. I find it hard to imagine a Batman movie not set in Gotham City.
Do we know if the entire shoot is in LA or just a portion of it?
According to that Wikipedia article, partially shot in Louisiana. But a lot of films are shot there, due to tax breaks.
Could be they’ll head to Chicago to do some exteriors for a couple of weeks and that’s it.
I’m going to have a hard time believing anything that doesn’t come out of Nolan’s mouth or a press release. A lot of it could just be smoke and mirrors. Let’s not forget all the rumors that were about when they were shooting in Hong Kong.
Philip Seymour Hoffman would make a great Penguin, and it could be believable as the origins of Penguin mention that “The Penguin received his alias from a childhood nickname, bestowed by his peers, who teased him because of his grotesque appearance and love of birds (some retellings of his origin suggest he also suffered from some sort of hip ailment, which caused him to waddle when he walked.)”
PSH would ROCK this role!!
Jonny Depp for the Joker
and Jim Carry for the riddler
I think that the ending of the Dark Knight marked a very unstable point in Batman’s career…so that his main resources are tied to Wayne Enterprise. I think this new villain will be attacking not only Batman, but also Bruce Wayne. The only character from “The Dark Knight” to know batman’s identity: Mr. Reese. It would be cool to see him attack Bruce Wayne’s trust fund while Wayne is powerless to stop him without logical motive. I really and truly thought that the Riddler would be an AWESOME pick for the next movie. Apparently not…
Finally we seem to have an answer–Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane. Discuss.
Filmman put this in the wrong thread. I hope he doesn’t mind that I put it here:
Why, oh why oh why oh why oh why couldn’t Tom Hardy have been HUSH?!
The doctor against the detective, boyhood friends…Bale against Hardy…damn. Damn, damn, damn damn damn…
I like Hardy. Think his Bane could be great fun. But not sure about Hathaway as Catwoman. Will take something out of the ordinary to make people forget about Pfeiffer the way Ledger made people forget about Nicholson.
Hush was a good graphic novel, but it’s a bit overrated. Hardly an iconic villain.
My bad, Slim-thanks.
Interesting this surfaces now. I’ve been watching the DVDs of Birds of Prey–remember that show? If you don’t, it was a major network series from 2002, and dealt with Huntress, (Batman and Catwoman’s daughter, Helena Kyle), and Oracle (the former Batgirl). Stupid fun.
I like the psychological undertones of having a character who grew up with Bale, and then we find out he tried to murder his parents and Batman’s father saved the mother and…regardless what merits the graphic novel might or might not have, what Nolan could have done with Hush and his backstory and how it relates to Wayne is something I really wanted to see. A murdering psycopath like the Joker played by Hardy?! Who allies himself with The Riddler?
But a dude with a really smart brain who taught himself everything he needed to know in *prison*?! Oy, vey….
Just looked at his Wikipedia…says he killed a priest…so there is that.
It should be noted that the press release does not mention the name “Catwoman,” only Selina Kyle, so we might not see Hathaway in the familiar outfit.
Bane!!!!!!!!!!!Bane!!!!!!!!!!!!Bane……….introduce robin into the mix and jean paul valley and go straight to the knightfall story line
..shortened of course. If someone would ever do it, it would be the best batman movie of all time. Cause then you ll have tge two batmans fighting for supremacy. Jean paul sadistic suit which he refers to himself as the Bat, against BW and his ideals. It would be tge greatest bat story ever told.
One more thing christian bale s bat suit sucks guy , first off refer back to micheal keatons cape and cowl. The reason the neck part is missing in that suit is for protection
and it just looks cool. Everything else is fine for bales suit, i mean come on look at the comics theres a reason for everything …..even if its just cool looking. If you would take keatons suit and bales mate them together then you d have something
