Star Trek Teaser Posters / First Images of Cast

Standard

The somewhat uninspiring teaser posters for JJ Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek have been released:

Not sure what to think.

As the cast is comprised of near-unknowns, it seems like the logical course of action would be to sell the iconic nature of the characters.  Instead, they seem to be stressing the actor’s youth and attractiveness (or in Bana’s case, possibly his “star” power.  Haha) over anything that would actually be interesting to the masses.  The Spock/Zachary Quinto would be the only exception, and that’s just because of the ears/hair.

It just seems like an odd marketing decision for something that is probably one of the most important releases in Paramount’s history.  Billions are on the line here and I’m starting to think they’re a little unsure about how to properly push it to the masses.  That 5 month delay is starting to look like a smart decision.

  1. That’s a cool thing you did with the pictures there, once you click them. Made up a Gallery in the Add visual, right?

Mission Impossible 3 has held up well and could almost be considered the best of the films in that series. Abrams big weakness has always been his obsession with attractive people in love. Worst part of Cloverfield and probably largely there because of his influence. If Abrams goes too much into Felicity mode on this, he’ll doom the re-invention to ridicule.

  2. Why do they all look like profile pictures from MySpace? You know where the women always take a picture from above-and-at-an-angle and the men all have their head tilted down slightly and their eyes straight ahead?
    Ridiculous.

  3. Mission Impossible 3 has held up well and could almost be considered the best of the films in that series.

I’m really skeptical on the first claim and puzzled by the second. It could “almost” be considered the best? There are only 3 (and god willing it will stay that way), so what you’re basically saying is that it’s better than the second one, but not as good as the first, right? That doesn’t really seem like praise to me.

  4. There are going to be more MI movies. Paramount is just waiting for Cruise’s option to lapse (believe it’s another 2-3 years) so they can move on to a cheaper, younger leading man

  5. I’m really skeptical on the first claim and puzzled by the second.

I saw it parts of it on television and wasn’t bored by what I saw, which in my eyes equals held up well. Third ones usually suck, but this one didn’t.

so what you’re basically saying is that it’s better than the second one, but not as good as the first, right?

Been a while since I saw the first one. It’s not a perfect or even very good film by any means, but it had some good scenes in it and was overall a good blockbuster thriller, I thought at the time. But I’m not sure now, considering how long it’s been. So almost.

Wasn’t high praise, just appreciating good and entertaining films.

  6. I am so tired of Bad Robot’s marketing. I’m burnt out of virals and partially-obscured peeks of publicity photos, teaser trailers that show nothing and “leaked” production reports.

Whether it’s this, Cloverfield 2, Lost, Fringe or whatever lame, beautiful 20-something drama he’s producing – I’m fucking done with analyzing anything but the actual trailers and end product.

    AMEN TO THAT, BROTHER!
    (Please forgive the caps.)
What was once a novel idea has now turned so crassly manipulative that I wonder if our younger generation even understood that something like Lonelygirl15 was actually fake…or if they even cared enough to find that out.
Abrams, a new Spielberg he is most certainly not.

  8. I like Abrams. Just rebelling against the marketing side.

Not everything has been be a secret, not everything has to be built up to a fever pitch. The fact that basic publicity images of the cast are being treated like the god damned Cloverfield monster is just the last straw for me.

  9. What was the last thing Abrams didn’t treat like it was some ’50′s nuclear testing secret?
    Felicity?
Gotta stand firmly on the side of not like. He is, himself, a marketing ploy. He’s been deemed by Hollywood as the second coming of whatever they need for the year. He is one of those who had a few good ideas and because Hollywood needs a marketable product, he becomes it.
I am lashing out that Damon Lindelof never gets enough popular credit for Lost.
Abrams isn’t related to you, is he?

  10. How about this?: Why not just keep everything secret until the movie marketing begins a few months out?
If something leaks out, so be it…? Yeah? Haven’t we all seen the Star Trek uniforms in those paparazzi photos anyway?
    Seems pointless.
