Opening in Chicago, 07/23

Standard

No real excuse for having this up late. Once again, not much going on this week.

Agora
Director: Alejandro Amenábar (Open Your Eyes, The Others, The Sea Inside)
Personal Interest Factor: 7
I find it strange that a new film by Amenábar, starring Rachel Weisz, opens today and this is the first I’ve heard of it. Apparently, it’s a movie about Hypatia of Alexandria, the famous female philosopher, and apparently, it’s just not very good. I still want to see it, though.
Metacritic: 54

Ramona and Beezus (trailer)
Director: Elizabeth Allen (Aquamarine)
Personal Interest Factor: 1
Seems harmless enough, but obviously not for me.
Metacritic: 55

Salt (trailer)
Director: Phillip Noyce (Catch a Fire, The Quiet American, Rabbit-Proof Fence, The Bone Collector)
Personal Interest Factor: 7
The odds of me wanting to see this if it were a studio hack instead of Noyce directing? Probably about zero. But Noyce has done good work before, even if it’s been a long time, and even though he’s had some terrible turkeys in his filmography (The Saint, Sliver). Anyhow, the reviews also seem fairly strong (considering), and the trailers have been OK, so I’ve been suckered into going.
Metacritic: 64
