Opening in Chicago, 08/03

Standard

Killer Joe (trailer)
Director: William Friedkin (Jade, Rules of Engagement, The Hunted, Bug)
Personal Interest Factor: 8
Haven’t even watched the trailer for this yet, but I’m on board. Friedkin teams up again with Tracy Letts, and their first collaboration Bug was weird and frightening and mostly overlooked. This one stars Matthew McConaughey, on the heels of very good performances in both Bernie and Magic Mike, and Emile Hirsch. Also, it’s NC-17, which means it’s only playing at one theater in town.
Metacritic: 60

Total Recall (trailer)
Director: Len Wiseman (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, Live Free or Die Hard)
Personal Interest Factor: 3
What a dull-looking movie. Even putting aside my dislike of the three lead actors (I like this poster, by the way, that shows Colin Farrell with that semi-confused look he gets on his face whenever he’s trying to act, and a person that is supposed to be Jessica Biel but looks nothing like her), it looks completely generic, the kind of thing destined to have a dozen copies in any given $7.99 bargain bins at Best Buy in two years. On the other hand, I should probably get around to seeing the original someday.
Metacritic: 44
