Mining Trade Production Listings from the 90′s

Standard

var.jpghr.jpg

I recently stumbled upon some archived production listings from the early 90’s on this site. They instantly took me back to my high school years, when I would rush to the mailbox every Monday afternoon eagerly looking for my copy of Weekly Variety.

Anyway, there’s some really fascinating stuff to be found within. I’ve pulled some of the jucier listings below, my comments in blue.

In the Good Old Days

Standard

It started as a minor labor dispute between a studio union and the producers and ended up as the bloodiest labor strike in Hollywood history, and it changed the face of Hollywood forever. It’s a story of murder, intrigue, bribery, collusion and Communist baiting. A cast of characters that include corrupt union bosses, movie moguls, gangsters and trade unionists.

This strike needs some molotov cocktails.

DeNiro/Pacino filming Righteous Kill down the road…I do not see them.

Shortly after the Connecticut legislature passed a series of tax incentives as an enticement for film productions to shoot in the state, we’ve suddenly become Hollywood East. In the past three months we’ve had: DiCaprio and Winslet filming Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road; Ford, Spielberg and LeBouf blowing stuff up for Indiana Jones 4; Deniro, Willis and Sean Penn lensing the badly titled What Just Happened? and…uh, Robin Williams and Travolta as Old Dogs.

Anyway, Robert Deniro, Al Pacino and Carla Gugino are filming Righteous Kill at a bar in my town. Unfortunately, they’re down in the dodgy sub-section that I normally refuse to acknowledge…much less visit.

BUT in the interest of (well, being bored) I put on my best wife-beater, drenched myself in Bud Light as a make-shift Cologne and took the plunge for a GONE ELSEWHERE…EXCLUSIVE®!

More semi-interesting pictures (including one “kinda” celebrity…not named DeNiro or Pacino) after the jump:

Die Hard 4′s Development Process Continues to Amaze, Predict World Events

Standard

Calls for all Bruce Willis films in development to be placed on the Homeland Security Department’s Watch List will likely be raised as this weekend brought another chapter in the seemingly endless Die Hard 4-plotlines-becoming-reality saga.

- First, the ending featured commercial airlines crashing in Midtown Manhattan. An unrelated project unfortunately hit first, prompting massive re-writes.

- The New York city finale was then moved to Louisiana. Can you imagine the devistation if the levees in New Orleans were to be destroyed and the city flooded? Yeah…so can I.

- How about Pennsylvania? Nothing ever happens there. What if the terrorists were to somehow ignite the Buckeye Pipeline that feeds 18 states and JFK airport? Oh

From a USA Today article on Fox’s plans for the X-Men franchise:

“The studio is also exploring a movie with Three Kings director David O. Russell based on the character of Emma Frost, a sexy mutant telepath who can transform her skin into diamonds. She is an X-Men comics regular but was not featured in the movies.”

Ok, to geek out for a second -

I was pretty stoked about David O. Russell potentially doing the “Silver Surfer” film, but this easilly trumps it.

Emma Frost is one of the most complex (and entertaining) characters in the X-Men mythos. Originally written as a one-dimensional villain, she really came into her own during Grant Morrison’s 2001-2004 run on the books.

Now, how the heck FOX is going create a viable spin-off film with her as the lead is a mystery – but this is certainly a project to watch.
