About Jackrabbit Slim

Location: Vegas, Baby! I’m much older than the other whippersnappers here, a baby boomer. I tend to be more snobbish about film, disdaining a lot of the multiplex fare for “cinema.” My favorite films: Woody Allen’s oeuvre (up until about 1990), The Godfather, The Graduate, A Hard Day’s Night, Pulp Fiction. Politics: Well, George McGovern was my political hero. I’m also a prickly atheist. Occupation: Poised to be an English teacher in Las Vegas. For many years I was an editor at Penthouse Magazine. My role on this blog seems to be writing lots of reviews and being the resident Oscar maven.

  1. Man, these are coming fast and furious, and I’m so confused…they’re opening Tattoo on Tuesday?! I thought it was an xmas movie. Like, released that day. And everyone thinks TinTin is going to beat Tattoo?!
    I am so confused…

  2. Tattoo was going to open on Wednesday, but got pushed up to opening on Tuesday night (eight PM shows). I’m confused, too, with it, Tintin, and Mi4 all in the mix.

  3. Wow, I literally have no idea what to choose.

    MI4: 40m
    Holmes
    No.

Speaking of The Darkest Hour: I’m astonished at how horrible it looks. I was really looking forward to it a year or two back, but just goes to show how easy it is to fuck up a solid screenplay.

  4. Okay – I hope you’ll indulge me and let me change my vote.

    Mi4 – $33.3 million

    1. Chipwrecked
    2. No

    Sorry.

  5. So Tattoo was scheduled for Thursday and not xmas day and was pushed to tuesday (why?) and MI4 opened on IMAX last Friday and opens wide this Wednesday and TinTin opens full wide (first time) Friday?! So then why is the deadline monday if MI4 opened LAST FRIDAY and what the hell os The Darkest Hour and oh no……….I think I’ve gone cross-eyed.

  6. The deadline is Monday because Tattoo opens on Tuesday, and we always have a deadline before any movies open. As to why they opened on Tuesday, ask the studio. The fact that Mi4 opened last week is immaterial. Did you want me to have a deadline for this weekend last Thursday?

  7. Was just being facetious. This release schedule is ridiculous.

    MI4: 60 million
    1. Sherlock Holmes
    2. No

  8. Christmas week has contained the most ridiculous release schedules as long as I’ve been in the business. It’s part strategy, part marketing, and a whole lot of guessing. Basically, it’s easy marketing that your movie opens on Christmas Day. But if Christmas Day gets too crowded, then distributors open their movie early to get a head start. This is especially beneficial if word-of-mouth is actually supposed to be good, which I assume is the case for Tattoo, but I don’t have any idea. By opening during the week, you get a couple of days of water-cooler talk about the movie so that when patrons are off for the holidays, they remember that a co-worker said that XYZ movie was really good.

But we have 1 on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, 1 on Friday and 2 on Sunday this year? Really?! I’m glad it’s not my job to figure out that schedule.

  9. It’s tempting to go with a 3-way tie for first, but that didn’t work for me last time. So instead, I’ll say:

    MI4 – 23 million (runners up: Holmes, 22 million; Tattoo 21 million)
    1. Holmes
    2. No

  10. Closing bell!

  12. Yes, one more week. Actuals for the three-day weekend won’t be released until tomorrow, so I’ll put up next week’s contest then. I think Jeanine and James have eliminated everyone else, but I urge everyone to play spoiler.
