Begging you to like me

Very confident marketing!  Maybe if you released more than three stills and, say, a trailer for one of your big summer tentpoles PRIOR to release that might help publicize things a little better.

Incidentally, I’ve heard through the grapevine that the film is shaping up to be surprisingly decent.   It just seems like the studio might be trying to get a handle on the campaign, which is understandable (as it’s a bit of a tough sell).

  1. There’s a new Total Recall movie coming out? Might as well, I suppose.

I’m still waiting for the Species remake. Seems like the time is right!

  2. Yep, starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Brian Cranston, Kate Beckinsale and Ethan Hawke. I would be nervous with a big-budget blockbuster featuring that cast, too. Seems like something they needed to shoot on the cheap or wait for a bigger star.

Agreed on Species, I would bet you’ll see that property resurrected in the next few years. Really, I would imagine many of MGM’s unexpected string of mid-90’s hits (The Birdcage, Get Shorty, Stargate, Ronin) will be ripe for remake soon.

Trivia: they developed a straight sequel to Total Recall about 19 years ago that became…Minority Report.

  3. You know, since you brought it up, The Birdcage still holds up terrifically to this day. I shudder to think of what a remake would look like in this day and age, though, where studios are loathe to make anything overtly political. It would probably have to be released via Sony Classics, but that would defeat the whole point.

  4. This movie does not exist.

And wait, what?! Does anyone have the script that was the sequel?!

Agreed, staggeringly funny film with a great heart.

I’ve really come to admire Williams’ performance over the years. He plays against expectations – very grounded and content to let the rest of the cast bounce off walls around him.

I do, but I actually just ran a search on Goggle and found it here

  6. You’re the best, man. Sorry I didn’t do that.
Cursory first glance? It actually says: Based on Minority Report.
    That’s cray.

Along those same lines, one of the underrated aspects of the movie are the performances by Futterman and Flockhart. Instead of participating in the farce themselves, or even really being in on the joke, they play their roles like people actually dealing with their parents.

I think that movie is the last one that really put the comic instincts of Mike Nichols on display. It’s so sure-handed, knowing when to play up the comedy and when to pull back. I don’t think too many directors could have made a movie with Nathan Lane’s and Gene Hackman’s characters work – they’re both so over-the-top ridiculous but in completely different ways – but he does and it’s hilarious.

  8. Haven’t seen The Birdcage for a fair while – didn’t like it as much as Brian or James did, but thought it was accomplished enough. Williams’ atypical underplaying of the lead sticks out in the memory as much as anything.

In the unlikely event they’d ever get her for such a thing, perhaps they could make a marketing angle about of having Michelle Williams (child version of Natasha Henstridge in the original) in the lead.
