About Jackrabbit Slim

Location: Vegas, Baby! I’m much older than the other whippersnappers here, a baby boomer. I tend to be more snobbish about film, disdaining a lot of the multiplex fare for “cinema.” My favorite films: Woody Allen’s oeuvre (up until about 1990), The Godfather, The Graduate, A Hard Day’s Night, Pulp Fiction. Politics: Well, George McGovern was my political hero. I’m also a prickly atheist. Occupation: Poised to be an English teacher in Las Vegas. For many years I was an editor at Penthouse Magazine. My role on this blog seems to be writing lots of reviews and being the resident Oscar maven.

  1. I saw the comedy ‘Bachelorette’ the other night without seeing any reviews on it (which were generally negative)… and immediately regretted it.

Unfunny, inept and embarrassing in its self-conscious attempts to be ‘shocking’, the only saving grace was that it had a short running time.

Reviewers keep saying this is a hybrid of ‘Bridesmaids’ and ‘The Hangover’ but the film I thought of was ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ as like that it was a demonstration of how dire comedies generally are these days, and waste a decent cast in the process as well (and poor Lizzy Caplan is in both!)

A good cast tries its best – Caplan provides some spark and Adam Scott has his moments, before he’s defeated by a cringe-worthy speech scene at the end of the film.

But the star of the film Kirsten Dunst is awful – a noxious mixture of mugging and nastiness. Easily the worst performance I’ve seen her give.

Will be hard to top as my worst for 2012. Rating: D
