Gone Elsewhere Meet Up

Nick, James and I met today at the Double Down Saloon in the East Village, NYC, today, and had a great time. It was heartening that after all these years these guys exceeded my expectations on being terrific people. We talked about almost everything, from movies to politics to our jobs. There is a standing invitation to visit Nick in Stockholm, where he will show us around.

About Jackrabbit Slim

Location: Vegas, Baby! I’m much older than the other whippersnappers here, a baby boomer. I tend to be more snobbish about film, disdaining a lot of the multiplex fare for “cinema.” My favorite films: Woody Allen’s oeuvre (up until about 1990), The Godfather, The Graduate, A Hard Day’s Night, Pulp Fiction. Politics: Well, George McGovern was my political hero. I’m also a prickly atheist. Occupation: Poised to be an English teacher in Las Vegas. For many years I was an editor at Penthouse Magazine. My role on this blog seems to be writing lots of reviews and being the resident Oscar maven.

  1. Cool. Wish I could have been there, but then you’d have had to revise the “terrific people” line.

Also, good to know what James looks like.

Slim’s first comment to me was that I was a doppelganger for the Barenaked Ladies guy, which I’ve heard many many times. Maybe it’s the glasses. It’s always funny seeing people you’ve only known over the phone or in text.

I’m assuming Slim will be posting the more explicit “Boys of Gone Elsewhere” pictorial on his personal blog. Hopefully behind a paywall.

Anyway, great time. Hopefully it won’t be a near-decade before we can do another meet-up.

  3. Ha! I was thinking the same thing, but I didn’t say it. I never would have guessed Nic to be the taller one.

  4. I’m 181cm, so 5 feet and 11 inches (according to google). Don’t get why it’s a surprise, though. Scandinavian genes, ftw.

  5. Scandinavian genes, ftw.

I’d mention that I’m 6’3”, but I find that people get a little nervous when people with German ancestry boast about their superior genetic makeup.
