Predict the #1 film of the weekend.
The one who predicts closest to the total Friday to Sunday gross for the #1 film wins 4 points. Runner-up gains 2 points. Predicting within half a million earns 2 extra points.
Bonus questions:
1. Which 2 movie will gross more this weekend: Grown Ups 2 or Despicable Me 2?
2. How far will The Lone Ranger fall – more or less than 60%?
Deadline is Thursday, July 11 11:59 pm (blog time)

Current rankings
Jackrabbit Slim – 26
Rob – 16
James – 13.5
Juan – 12
Joe Webb – 12
Brian – 10.5
Nick – 3.5
Filmman – 2
Jeanine – 1
Joe, I believe you need to adjust the deadline. There are no Wednesday openings this week, and July 3rd is already in the past.
Fixed! Thank you Slim
DM2 – 50M
1. DM2
2. Less
Grownups 2: 47 million
1. GU2
2. Less
Despicable Me 2: $39 million
1. Despicable Me 2
2. More
A just for fun question – will Grown Ups 2 get above or below 10% on Rottentomatoes? For reference, the first got 9% positive.
I’ll go above just for the sake of positive thinking.
Despicable Me 2 – $42.56 million
1) Despicable Me 2
2) More
And I say “above” on Grown Ups 2, but only slightly.
This week is tougher for me than I thought.
Pacific Rim – $45.6m
1. DM2
2. Less
Juan’s question – Above!
Good to see someone taking the risk with Pacific Rim. I almost changed my guess on the off-chance it blows away every expectation and actually opens.
Pacific Rim – 45.7 million
1. Despicable Me 2
2. Less
That seems like a crazy guess, but this has been one wacky summer.
really Juan?
Lol, look at it this way – you guys are guaranteed points if PR is #1.
it’s like he giraffe’d me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVKX21YHWJM
Early returns suggest a duel between Pacific Rim and Grownups 2.
Revised numbers: looks like Gu2 might take the weekend with DM2 in second and PR in third.
Looks like DM2 at 44M, GU2 at 42M and PR at 38M.
While that PR number isn’t exceptional, it’s certainly not bad given the doom and gloom scenarios of a low/mid 20’s opening. There’s no chance of it launching a franchise and Del Toro’s big budget filmmaking future is a lot murkier…but he’s probably better off .
GU2’s number is the perfect cap on this shitty weekend.
This is a bitter loss, because what hope can aspiring filmmakers have of bringing original material to the screen when audiences won’t show up for a Guillermo del Toro robots Vs. monsters movie? Now Hollywood REALLY won’t do anything without an IP behind it.
I don’t think a rich guy getting a nearly 200 million dollar budget to make a saturday morning cartoon is worth our tears.
This is more of an indictment of out-of-control spending. If he’d figured out a way to make the film for 100 million: we’d be looking at a new franchise.
Besides: look at the top 15 this weekend – 11 are original properties.
I’m not crying for him – I’m crying for future filmmakers.
Sorry for my delay. DM2 wins with $43,892,895. Lone Ranger drops 60.6%… Rob Wins!
And TURBO is opening tomorrow, so I’ll move the due date to Wednesday night
