Opening in New Haven – Weekend of May 9th, 2014

Here’s a sickeningly-late rundown of what’s opening in Connecticut the weekend of May 9th.  You hate me, don’t you?  Get in line.

Neighbors:  Comedy about a young couple (Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne) who find themselves at war with a neighboring fraternity house.  I’m somewhat excited to see this, although the resume of Nicholas Stoller is filled with films I actually hate (Get him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement).  No Jason Segal or Russell Brand is certainly a step in the right direction.  74% on RT.

Personal interest factor: 6

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return:  Embarrassingly-cheap looking animated sequel to The Wizard of OZ. Featuring the talents of Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, Martin Short and Kelsey Grammer. That would be a groan-worthy cast in 1994, let alone modern times.

Personal interest factor: 0

Those with time machines can still see Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and Mommy Dearest (1981), which played at The Criterion Friday-Sunday.

  1. Saw ‘Neighbors’ (or as it was called here in Oz, ‘Bad Neighbours’). I was wary because Seth Rogen is one of my least favourite comic actors but I thought the concept was appealing and it had gotten relatively decent reviews, so how bad could it be?

As it turned out, really bad!

Just a terrible movie all round. The crudeness and vulgarity substituting for wit wasn’t a terrible surprise but it was surprised how inept it was in other areas. The worst being the depiction of the relationship between Rogen & Byrne which was embarrassingly written and acted and surely nothing like how any husband/wife ever communicate.

A pity as the elements were there for a fun comedy but this missed 95% of it. I think I’ll be hard pressed to watch a Rogen-starring film for a fair while.
