The Expendables 3 DVD screener leaks online weeks before August release

A DVD screener of Patrick Hughes’ The Expendables 3 has reportedly (and by reportedly, I mean “definitely”) leaked online. Dozens of reviews are popping up this evening while the movie press is distracted by happenings in San Diego.

Obviously this is a huge freaking deal for Lionsgate and almost certainly the most damaging leak of a film since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

More to come.

Update Friday 1:00 pm EST: Variety reports that the screener has already been downloaded 189,000 times via BitTorrent.  No comment from Lionsgate, but it’s worth noting that producer Nu Image sued 23,000 individuals users for pirating the first Expendables picture in 2010.

What Variety didn’t note is that film is available on dozens (if not hundreds) of streaming sites as well.  There’s no way of knowing how many have streamed the picture, but it’s probably safe to assume “a fu-kload”.

One user on the IMDB noted that it was, at least briefly, up on YouTube.  Good lord.

  1. 200,000 is a lot of lost revenue.

They need to come up with some way to make DVDs unrippable.
