To all our American readers and contributors, Happy Independence Day!

About Jackrabbit Slim

Location: Vegas, Baby! I’m much older than the other whippersnappers here, a baby boomer. I tend to be more snobbish about film, disdaining a lot of the multiplex fare for “cinema.” My favorite films: Woody Allen’s oeuvre (up until about 1990), The Godfather, The Graduate, A Hard Day’s Night, Pulp Fiction. Politics: Well, George McGovern was my political hero. I’m also a prickly atheist. Occupation: Poised to be an English teacher in Las Vegas. For many years I was an editor at Penthouse Magazine. My role on this blog seems to be writing lots of reviews and being the resident Oscar maven.

  1. Has anyone seen the remaining summer release schedule? Has anyone been less excited for a summer movie season than this?

  2. I remember hearing an interview with Rocco a few years ago where he said part of the source for his rage during that scene was because he had come into the film at a late stage and felt like an outsider with the clear closeness of the main cast members.

Also it should be said that while he wasn’t in Godfather Part 2, the scene where Hyman Roth talks about Moe Greene is great as well.

  3. Pretty good summation of Tom Cruise’s acting career by Mark Harris on Grantland. He won’t go down as one of the great actors but he’s probably underappreciated in that regard and (as Harris observes) it’s a pity he’s made so many action-based pics in the past decade trying to prove he still has what it takes as an action star when he could be doing more interesting roles (as he did often in the 1985-2005 period)
