That was an incredible screwup.
Jackrabbit Slim: 18
James: 12
Marco: 12
Holy crap on a cracker…how does that even happen?
They had to open that envelope, so how could Warren Beatty have said it had the name of Emma Stone on it? It was an unopened envelope. That was amazing.

Remember that there are two cards for each award in case a presenter rips it up or something. They gave the wrong envelope to Beatty. When the error was realized, the correct card was brought out. Of course, it said Best Actress right on it so he shares some of the blame.
How do you feel about Moonlight winning best picture, Slim?
I thought it was middle of the pack. I liked La La Land better, but my favorite was Manchester by the Sea. I’ll put up a full post later tonight, but to be short, I think Moonlight capitalized on the push for diversity–it’s the first Best Picture that is solely about black American life, and to have a gay protagonist. (I don’t think there’s a white face in it).
I need to see Moonlight, but I’ve become pretty jaded re: these films made almost exclusively to win awards.
I’d love to see a mention on what you think of Casey Affleck’s sexual harassment suits and why you think that didn’t hurt him and hurt Birth of a Nation and Nat Turner.
James: I agree. I’m not even sure why I watched the awards. I’m glad I did watch it for that last ten minutes, but it just feels so calculated, all of it.
Filmman: One is white, one is black. I think it’s that simple.
James: I hardly think Moonlight was made to win awards. It’s not Oscar baity at all, and may be lowest budget of any film to win a Best Picture.
Moonlight’s budget was 1.5 million. In comparison, Slumdog Millionaire’s was 15 million. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would make a film for 1.5 million and ever dream it would win an Oscar.
Looks like PwC has pinpointed the scapegoat; they’ll be lucky not to lose the Academy account.

I didn’t mean to lump Moonlight into that category. And I believe it is the lowest budgeted film to win BP.
