Predict the #1 film for the weekend of June 16th-18th, 2017

The one who predicts closest to the total Friday to Sunday gross for the #1 film wins 4 points. Runner-up gains 2 points. Predicting within half a million on the first question each week earns 2 bonus points.

Opening across the United States this weekend we have Pixar’s Cars 3.  While this latest installment is scoring slightly better reviews than its predecessors, it’s a franchise many will be relieved to see hit the finish line. Like Owen Wilson’s career, this series ran out of gas long ago.

Sony’s Rough Night has a lot going for it (Scarlett Johansson! Kate McKinnon! Jillian Bell! Ilana Glazer!) but I can’t imagine that this lame-looking mash-up of The Hangover and Very Bad Things is worthy of their talents. Similarly, the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me seems like a low-rent take on a potentially interesting subject.

Thanks to the unexpected success of 2016’s The Shallows and star Mandy Moore’s hit series This is Us, the shark attack drama 47 Meters Down is going wide theatrical this weekend.  This is particularly notable because the film was scheduled for home video release a year ago (advanced screeners were even sent to and reviewed by professional critics) before changing distributors at the eleventh hour.  I’m not sure how well this gamble will pay off, but it’s a fascinating case.

Bottom line: it’s a great weekend to do anything but go to the movies!

Deadline is Friday, June 16th at 12:00 pm (EST)

  1. One promising thing about Rough Night is that it’s from the director of Broad City, although the screenplay is not by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson.

  2. I’m going to hazard a guess that ‘Rough Night’ will flop hard. Not because the trailer I saw looked desperate and lame, but because the concept feels 5 years too late as James alluded to. Especially so with films like ‘Bachelorette’ and ‘Bad Moms’ popping up regularly in the past few years.

  3. Bell was also completely wasted in Fist Fight earlier in the year. Forced to deliver incredibly lame joke after joke. It seems like they shot a first draft script.

  4. CARS 3 – $62m
    ROUGH NIGHT – $19.5m
ALL EYEZ ON ME – $8.1m
    47 METERS DOWN – $5.8m

  5. Cars 3D: Checking the Oil – $58 million
    Rough Night – $15.5 million
All Eyez On Me – $19 million
    47 Meters Down – $7 million

  6. Saw Cars on Wednesday night. Forgot to write a review and hazard a guess. I will do one of those two things by the end of the day today

As it turned out, I actually underestimated how badly ‘Rough Night’ would do. Not only is it well below $10 million but it’s actually tracking to finish behind 47 Meters Down.

Not been the best few months for Scarlett Johansson filmwise. Also, Kate McKinnon has been in several films in the past 12 months and none have done particularly well critically or finanically; her potential for a flourishing film career on the back of her talents and popularity she’s gotten from her SNL work is going to waste.

  8. I’d like to see her work with a director that actually pushes her to be more than just a wacky character before writing her film career off. She’s enormously talented.

  9. Paul Feig was pretty highly rated as a comedy director by many, how many others have better reps currently?

Off the top of my head you’d could say definitely Edgar Wright and Adam McKay, Judd Apatow probably (surprised she hasn’t been in one of his films already), perhaps Todd Phillips.

  10. McKinnon is like Dana Carvey – enormously talented but in a way ideally suited to sketch comedy. I thought her Ghostbusters character worked, though.

  11. Actuals:
    Cars 3 BV $53,688,680
All Eyez on Me LG/S $26,435,354
    47 Meters Down ENTMP $11,205,561
    Rough Night Sony $8,004,283

  12. Cars 3: James +4, Slim +2
Rough Night: James +4, Juan +2
All Eyez: Slim +4, Juan +2
    47 Meters Down: Juan +4, Marco +2
