A good weekend to stay at home and watch the football playoffs.
Number one this weekend at the box office will be The Upside (44), a remake of the French film Intouchables, about a recently-paroled convict looking for work who ends up in an unlikely friendship with a paralyzed billionaire. Starring the diminutive homophobe Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. Looks like a TV movie-of-the-week to me.
For animal lovers there is A Dog Way’s Home (50), the tale of a pooch who travels 400 miles to get back to his home. Hasn’t this story been made several times already? I love dogs, but I’ve never really loved a dog movie. Maybe Lady and the Tramp.
Rounding out the wide releases this week is Replicas (17), about a doctor (Keanu Reeves) who tries to bring his family back from the dead. Horrible reviews, so the only way I would have seen in it is if Alice Eve had done a nude scene. Sadly, she does not.
In limited release is a left-over bit of Oscar bait from 2018, On the Basis of Sex (60), with Felicity Jones as a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg blazing a trail and winning Supreme Court cases that state that there is such a thing as sex discrimination. This might have been interesting but it seems superfluous after the good documentary from earlier this year, RBG, in which we see the real thing.
